Joy school currently
has approximately 10,000 students enrolled in various classes throughout
Taiwan and China. Students generally range in age from 3 to 16 years
of age, and would attend one of the three major programs offered by
Joy.

 |
Joy Pre-schools – Students range in age from 3-7 years old
and attend classes on a full day basis. Classes start at 9:00am
and finish at 3:30pm. There is an extended lunch and nap-time
between 11:30am and 1:30pm, which is customary here in Taiwan.
Teachers are welcome to join students during snack and lunch
times, or bring along their own food. A weekly teaching schedule
is provided by the school outlining topic, math, writing, science,
art and P.E. times, as well as snack and play times. Each class
is handled through the co-operation of a foreign teacher and
a Chinese teaching assistant, and class sizes range from 5 to
15 students. Teachers have their own homeroom and teach the
same class all day, each day. Chinese assistants are available
to care for the needs of the students, however they generally
have very little direct input into the conducting of classes.
Students are discouraged from speaking Chinese at school, and
this practice, coupled with their young ages, ensures that they
become conversant in the English language in as little as a
couple of months. Teaching materials, guides, props and workbooks
are all provided by the school, as are specialist materials
required for art and science projects etc. Students go on a
two to three hour outing once a week, to places such as local
parks, museums and other places of interest. Each semester students
also go on a full day outing to places such as an amusement
park or National place of interest. Transportation is provided
by the school, and teachers accompany their own class of students.
American School (JAS) – This program has been developed by Joy
school specifically for students who have graduated from the
Joy Pre-schools and have moved on to elementary school. First
and second grade elementary school students in Taiwan spend
only half a day at Chinese school, so these students return
to Joy School for a three hour English class in the early afternoon
of each day. Third, fourth, fifth and sixth grade students have
two hours of class everyday. With conversation and listening
skills well developed through their years within the pre-school
system, these students have English fluency levels approximately
equivalent to those of first and second grade students in English
speaking countries. Once again a program including topic, writing
and reading books has been fully developed by Joy School for
use in these classes, and acts as an extension to the materials
already taught to these children during their preschool years.
Specific training, workshops and teaching guides are on offer
to ensure that teachers are able to most effectively teach these
students. Chinese assistants are available to care for the needs
of the students, however they generally have very little direct
input into the conducting of classes.
Joy Regular School – This program is very different to the two
programs described above, and it comprises the majority of students
at Joy school. Aimed at elementary and junior high school students,
classes are held twice a week for two hours each time. Foreign
and Chinese co-teachers share equal responsibility for teaching
the required materials within this program, each teaching one
hour of each class. Students take a placement test upon enrollment
at Joy school ensuring that they are placed in classes with
students at similar levels, and written and oral tests at the
completion of each level ensure that the level of students in
each class remains equal. A special 'Starter Series' has been
adapted for younger students at the Regular Joy Schools, and
is aimed at first and second grade elementary school students
who have not studied English before. Students who have previously
studied English or who have completed the Starter Series, then
move on to the 12 level 'Joy English' text-book series. Each
level takes approximately three months for students to complete,
and each unit has a combination of vocabulary, grammar point
and a reader or dialogue for practice. On completion of this
twelve level series, students graduate to a three level series
titled 'Super Joy'. These texts expand upon the language taught
at lower levels, with an emphasis on using this knowledge to
make more cohesive sentences and paragraphs, both orally and
literally. Upon graduation from the 'Super Joy' series, students
may join 'Advanced Level Classes'. The advanced texts are equivalent
in many ways to the texts used by adult English learners, and
the aim is to add more current content to the student's English
knowledge.
The majority of regular school classes are conducted between
the hours of 4:30 and 9:30pm on weekday afternoons. As the students
in the advanced classes are often Junior High School students,
these classes are generally held once a week on Saturdays, and
are three hours in duration. During winter and summer vacations,
morning classes are also available.
In addition to the above programs, Joy School holds English
camps during vacation periods. Students are given the opportunity
of joining these camps both here in Taiwan as well as in destinations
overseas. These camps have a component of English class time
combined with travel and play time.
More information regarding the programs described above can
