Teaching Tips #109

Are you one of those teachers who find yourself dealing with the same problems with the same students? For example, there are those students who just don’t do spelling review at home. What is there left to try? How else can you encourage them? What about the students who always make the same grammatical errors, oral or written. How will it ever be corrected when there’s nothing left to try?

Often we’ll look at the problem through our own eyes and deal with it accordingly. But sometimes it may not match the student’s needs and it just won’t work. Sometimes we may be asking too much of the student. Forcing the student to do the correction may not always work. It may work with some of your students but not all of them. Is it because of the way they are or because of the way they have come to learn?

If you were able to remove all judgment you have with each of your students, look at them afresh, you would see the situation in the original light. If you sternly ask your students to be quiet, the ones who obey you are probably used to punishment and understand why it is used. The ones who seem as if they didn’t hear you, probably didn’t or don’t want to hear you. These students need a different approach when it comes to corrections. They need to be shown the “why” behind the reason for punishment and result. This can be done by setting goals together, explaining guidelines, using positive encouragement and re-enforcement, and rewarding the students for any improvements you notice.
As for the question regarding spelling review, you should do a little more practice during class and offer your students some fun, effective activities. As for grammatical errors, oral and written, have all your students write common errors into their notebook-use the back pages of the book, and have them read it each class after everyone has arrived.

There are always other ways, unusual ways, and new approaches to try to help your students solve ongoing problems. Look at your students as individuals and treat them accordingly. Never give up.
